How Much Does it Cost to Install a GFCI Outlet?

When you're looking into the cost to install a GFCI outlet, you can expect to pay $153 - $228, typically.

What is a GFCI?

A ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) is a device that's designed to protect you and your family against severe, potentially fatal, electric shocks and burns caused by your home electrical system. A GFCI outlet (receptacle) monitors the flow of current. If it detects a ground fault -- an unintentional electrical path to the ground -- it will immediately cut the power, to prevent burning or electrocution of anyone in physical contact with the electrical system.

A GFCI outlet is bulkier than its counterpart, a GFCI circuit breaker, and you will need several installed rather than just one. However the outlet is simple to test and check for proper function. You can also reset it easily. A further advantage is that you can spot the problem quickly when an outlet trips, as opposed to a breaker.

Install GFCI protection anywhere that electricity may come into contact with water -- your kitchen, bathroom, wet bar, garage, unfinished basement , and all outdoor spaces.

Cost Breakdown

  • Materials and Supplies -- The GFCI circuit breaker and any miscellaneous fittings and connectors are included in the price.
  • Labor -- Your electrician may charge you an hourly rate (usually with a minimum fee) or per job. If a ground conductor needs to be added at the receptacle box, the cost will be higher.

Get the Most for Your Money

Check your local building code to find out exactly where you are required to install GFCI protection.

Protect yourself against accidents and make sure that you will be insured in case of an electrical accident. Hire a licensed electrician to install GFCI outlets. As the old joke goes: You might think professional electricians are expensive, but the cost of amateur electrical work can be truly shocking.

Save money. Plan ahead and schedule several electrical updates within a single service call.
