Fiberglass Garage Doors
If you are looking for a garage door that resembles wood (but isn't wood) and looks great, you may want to consider a fiberglass garage door. While this garage door type is not hugely popular, there are still some homeowners who prefer it. For instance, people living near the ocean often opt for fiberglass garage doors because the fiberglass resists salt-air corrosion.
What are fiberglass garage doors?
Fiberglass garage doors are constructed with aluminum frames and fiberglass panels. The panels are lightweight, and the door ends up at about the same weight as an aluminum door.
Fiberglass garage doors -- advantages
- Fiberglass garage doors are lightweight, simplifying the installation process. In addition, they're easier to lift, even manually.
- Maintenance of fiberglass doors is minimal. Just hose down occasionally to keep them clean. Clear coat every 1-3 years to prevent fading.
- Fiberglass won't rot, warp, or corrode due to dampness or salt air exposure. It also doesn't expand and contract with changes in temperature.
- These doors are termite-proof and don't dent easily. Garage door repair is uncomplicated, because a single panel can be replaced.
- Fiberglass doors are semi-transparent and will allow natural light into your garage.
- This type of garage door can be formed into a wide variety of designs. It may be painted, as well.
Fiberglass garage doors -- disadvantages
- Fiberglass becomes brittle and breaks easily in cold weather.
- Fiberglass garage doors tend to fade and/or yellow with age.
- Standard fiberglass doors are poor insulators compared to other materials. (However, new versions include double- and triple-layer models, with insulation between the layers.)
