Work Description: Tree trimming, removal, planting and general landscape
Comments: Dean, if I could give you a MINUS 5 stars, I would. I can't believe the scam you pulled on us. It's unbelievable. Anyone out there debating whether to use Dean to do any kind of landscaping, be very aware of this guy. Let me start by saying that Dean came recommended by a neighbor and had done work in our neighborhood before. I needed 11 Pecan Trees trimmed and 2 removed with stump grinding. $3500 just for that. Then he recommends cutting down one of the trees he already trimmed at an additional $350 and we said ok. By the way, this guy will find anything wrong on your property just so he can sell you and stay there as long as possible to milk you for every dime possible. Next, he wanted to trim our 10+ ficas along the retaining wall. Another $1200. All these things needed to be done so we agreed. I didn't get multiple estimates on anything because he did do a lot of work on the property until that point. So we trusted him, and did not price check his quotes. He had also shown up on time, and when he didn't, he would send a text to let us know he wouldn't be there that day which was ok. Here is where things got crazy. When it came time to plant citrus trees, repair irrigation, add irrigation(at his professional suggestion), his work began to falter. He charged $2100 for drip irrigation and did a terrible job. Next was a knock at the door at 930 at night. When I answered I was surprised to see him there on a Saturday night. He asked for $5400 up front for the complete front yard work we had agreed on. He said he was going to lose his house(a lie because you can't be foreclosed on during covid), and he had to pay workers, etc. We wrote the check because at that point he had not given us any reason that we shouldn't trust him, and we didn't know the drip system was done improperly. This required having a little faith in the guy that he would show up and complete the job. That was Saturday. Come Monday he was a no show with no text. Tuesday he cashed my checks and still no show. This is when alarm bells went off. When I wrote him the check(by the way, he uses a check cashing place which is a red flag as well), he was so thankful and said he would have it done that week and we would be all done. His favorite words to use with you are "Now it will be done right and you won't have to worry about anything!" So now I'm starting to price check and call around. He wanted $2500 to spread 10 tons of screened apache brown rock which was included in that last check. I called Riverside Rockery and they quoted me $780 for 10 tons delivered and spread. That's a $1700 difference. When I called Dean out on it he said he was being charged $1600 for the rock from his place, which means he wanted $900 to spread it. Then he tells me that he was overcharged for the rock by $700. You would think if that was true, which it wasn't, he would refund me the difference. Nope. I asked him for a refund on the rock and said we would do it ourselves, and he said he is not in the position to give refunds. Evidently, he's not in the position to do the work either. To make matters worse, he said he went to Montana for Christmas and kept putting off showing up. He pulled out all my bushes before supposedly leaving and has not contacted us since. Now I have no front yard landscape in a community with an HOA, so it's a matter of time before they say something to me. This is not to mention how many times he said he'd be here to work and now has just cut off communication altogether. Dean, you owe me $5450 plus a partial refund on the backyard drip system or you need to make it right and stop blowing us off after asking, in fact begging for us to pay you ahead of time for a job not even started yet. Stop the excuses and man up. We have done nothing to deserve this treatment from you.Mesa AZ
