Comments: After encountering a ridiculous upsell from my previous AC service company for a new compressor and air handler (nearly triple[!] what I ended up paying - it's quite a racket some of these companies have going) I got some bids with networx leads. Nitro AC was one of these. I found it a bit difficult to find info on Nitro from their website, and you always wonder who is writing the reviews. I didn't want anything smart-home (more stuff to break) and had already done a cost calculation given my AC usage, the cost per kwh (i.e, SEER=20 will cost 80% (16/20) of SEER=16 to operate, yes that's how small the advantage is), to figure out that a SEER=20 took over 40 years to pay for itself. Nope, nothing's going to last that long. Picked a brand (Trane) and found the right model numbers for mid-range SEER, non-smart-home, that matched a 3.5 ton air handler/compressor combo. Do this, and that way contractors are just bidding on the model number and install, far more clear for everyone. No need to 'round up'. 1200 sq ft. = 3 ton, more or less. And do you really need control to 0.1 degree?Turns out Nitro A/C is a midsized company, has 3 crews doing commercial and 4 residential, and have been in business 6 years, with the owner having 17 years experience. They arrived on time, were very careful to not damage a wooden stairwell while they are battling to hoist a heavy air handler that barely fit through the attic access door. No problems, done by early afternoon, and it all works. Professional, no-nonsense crew. Better warranty. Absolutely, pick these guys. I would use again.
I'm not sure why the prices vary so much between businesses. With some of them, if they are sending salesmen to pick a unit for you, pretty soon it is a thousand for in-line filters (why?) another thousand for a full-house surge protector (what?), duct work (no, it's fine), some slightly higher SEER with an enormous markup because they have to pay for the guy's salary. Am delighted to have found a reputable company who will do all the hard labor at a fair price and doesn't have just 2 employees where you wonder if they are going to be around next week.
