Comments: It has been 5 weeks to the day that I have contacted Smith and Sons Paving almost every single day for the past 5 weeks. I haven’t gotten a reply via message or a call back. The work done does not meet Virginia standards. The asphalt laid has no base layer and the asphalt isn’t the industry standard of 2 to 4 inches (it’s not even an inch). I can push it with my thumb and create indents. My wheelbarrow legs have left indents in the pavement from it being so thin. Grass is busting through. They also did a patch job where old, cracking pavement was cut out and then went back over the cutout. That section is peeling. You can put your fingers under it and pull it up like clay on a table. I also had them do a hot coat over the existing driveway and they didn’t even clean the driveway. They just sprayed over the bobcat and backhoe tracks so now I have dirt tracks permanently running through my driveway. Additionally, when the work was being completed, one of their works fell asleep / passed out / was under the influence in the skid steer bobcat and the machine was on. The machine was bouncing all over the place right in front of my mailbox and I had to risk going over there and waking him up and making sure he was okay. The contract signed has a 1 year warranty but it doesn’t seem like they are going to honor it since I can’t even get in touch with them. Maybe an attorney will have better luck at contacting them. This entire experience has been an absolute nightmare. I wish I had looked Smith and Sons Paving up when they had come knocking on my door to do work through the neighborhood because I would have never accepted their services. Nevertheless - a contract is to be honored and a warranty is to be honored.Frederick MD

Comments: Team came out fast and was able to start the following week after quote which was nice. The addition to the driveway looked good, they saw cut out a portion and refilled it and then coated the entire driveway. The quality was horrible on the sawcut portion as the cut was not even close to being straight and when the driveway was sealed it was sealed over dirt and debris which needed to be redone. They came back out and cleaned the driveway and resealed it completing the job until I parked on the new section of driveway. Each time a vehicle was parked on it, it left dents in the asphalt where the tires were sitting. After multiple contact attempts they came out and heated the asphalt and packed twice but still did not fix the issue. Took weeks of messaging every day for them to come back out and recoat that portion. (Still afraid to park on it so I dont know if that even fixed the issue) They should have coated it again as that Is what I paid for so that took over a week and they didn't show when they said they would and took multiple contacts to get them to come back out. Finally sealed it and got seal on garage, brand new garage doors, house, sidewalk ect. plus coated over dirt, chunks of asphalt that they didn't clean off driveway, and grass ect when coating driveway. Contacted them again and they agreed to come back and clean / seal and refund $500 for the damage they caused. I agreed even though damage would have been much higher than that. Came out and cleaned ashphalt chunks off driveway (kind of) and was told 3 weeks ago they would be back out to reseal as the chunks took asphalt seal up. Still have not been out and no one will answer my calls or texts and driveway still has not been fixed. I would not recommend this company to anyone! Pay more, wait longer, do what you have to do to get quality. My neighbor had his sealed by someone else and it looks way better than mine and they were in and out. Mine has been sealed 3 times by this company and it still is not right and looks worse than it did before. They do not show when they say they will, communication is horrible, and quality is horrible. Also the workers lied about what they did and luckliy we were able to show on our security cameras that they did not do what they said they did.Martinsburg WV

Work Description: to put millings down on a long farm road and around a bend in the road and up to the general parking area. the contract was written on january 18th, 2020. they did respond immediately, in fact so fast i was amazed. that is they responded by phone, but then so did another company. i did not write theoriginal review. they did. i did not have a computer until the end of march. they did not come back until may 11, 2020. the wood that was stacked at the top of the drive was long gone. my neighbor also committed dto them. astounding how many timnes we had to call and text. i didnot do anythintg but call because as i said i only had athe computer at the end of march, 2020. when they did come back i called at 8am that morning and they said theyw oudl be her in a hour. at 11 am i had to go out on an errand

Comments: I really want everyone to know what we have been dealing with over the past week with a paving company, Smith and Sons located in Inwood, WV. I called them last Monday for an estimate of how we wanted our driveway done as they had great reviews and pictures of finished work. We ultimately decided to widen the left side over to meet the porch and bring it straight down to the culvert and then to widen the right side down to the fence and bring it down to the culvert. I firmly expressed that we did not want asphalt infront of the porch. Upon negotiation we settled on a great price, or so we thought. I was promised a contract before the job was started and on several occasions since. I did receive an email with a proposal and cost. Last Thursday our neighbor sent us a picture of what they were doing. I then called Carl, (my only point of contact) and asked if he widened the driveway to the porch and he stated he didn't but could come back for a price of $500. I said no and I'll see him at 6pm when he was for the second time to give me a contract. When I arrived home I noticed their one ton roller parked in the middle of the freshly paved driveway! We met and i explained that the work done was not acceptable and needed to be corrected. He told me that he spoke with his "dad" and i could pay $250 for the cost of the material. I then reinterated that i am not paying for a correction as he didn't perform the original agreed upon service and of he's not going to fix the mistake I wasn't paying him at all and I'll see him in small claims and I'm not binded to anything as I still have yet to get a contract. He then got nasty and said he'd come back Monday and correct it. He left the paver and roller on our property. Later that same evening we noticed that we were unable to close our gate due to the asphalt over running the fence line. I mentioned this to Carl via text and he stated he would correct that Monday. Over the weekend my other half and I marked what we wanted. Well, Monday came and went without any communication from Carl. Tuesday, my other half made a phone call to Carl twice with leaving one voicemail. A return call was made with an excuse of his grandmother was in an accident and he told his secretary to notify us. I then recieved a text apology with being told everything will be fixed that day. Again it was not. We met again at 6pm and again I explained what we wanted done to correct the original job and was told that today, Wednesday, they will be out between 8-830am. The solution to the gate was for him to lift the gate to where it will swing closed. Today, I received a text that he would be there in 45 minutes (9am). At 905am he arrived with a coworker who i spoke with. I showed and explained again what needed to be done and that they can not manipulate the gate as it will void our warranty by that installer. I was then told they'd be back in an hour with the asphalt. At 1010am the man i had spoke with and his two sons arrived. They did not cut away the sidewalk and still put asphalt infront of the porch like i stated i did not want several times and even with me standing right there he did it anyway!!!! Then he had the nerve to tell me "that's not what I was told" when i asked where's the saw to cut the sidewalk so he could make a straight line. I don't care what Carl said, I'm the customer and that's NOT what i said!!! I then waited over an hour for Carl to come back with a contract and he never showed. I sent a text at 1215pm that i had to go to work and couldn't wait any longer. And now at 648pm, i got a text that he'll bring it tomorrow. Comments: What was promised was not done. It began on January 17, 2020. I had wood stacked at the top of the drive for easy access for the fireplace. I had to move that in order to square off the parking area.So the job was done on two different occasions.
Well they gave me two parking places with millings and left the third space void of millings. There seems to be confusion about the area to be covered because it is patently obvious that they did not cover the whole area and put up excuses that they did not commit to what I said on the 11th of May 2020 when they FINALLY came back.
Demanded 8,000.00 up front in the beginning of the job and had the nerve to ask if they could cash the check right away. That infers that i might issue a bad check.
The contract also says hot tar on top of the millings. Completely disagreed with that from one guy, but then they did put tar of some sort down at the top of the drive where parking is. Wish i could send photographs.
Granted we had weather issues, but really to not come back for 4 months. and we did talk on the phone. There were so many men here that I could not keep it straight.
Oh and did I mention that there was a child with them. Their excuse for not coming back was the virus and that they would not cross state lines without a 50,000 dollar fine. Not true. Disconcerting as to who was in charge. Carl or some other man.
This business of "god bless" is rather unprofessional and certainly god would not be pleased with what his friends on earth promised.
I also wonder if they have a license to do business in all the states they say they service. on the business card it says, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia and Pennsylvania.
Amazing how many folks are pleased. Must not be big jobs. For approximately the cost of the materials which is recycled paving from state highways and the manpower.
I would say they made out very well. I bet it is not 6 man hours total. Note on their estimates and business card it does not give their address. although they say Inwood, West VA. I hope "daddy" is pleased with the check.

Smith & Sons gave us a guarantee, but it appears not to be worth anything! After many phone calls I made trying to reach them I finally was called back. I was told they were coming to fix our issues on November 1. As you may remember we had days of rain during that period and they couldn’t do the repairs promised. Comments: We had our driveways sealed and 2 spots patched with a 2 year warranty, however both of the areas that were supposed to be patched have never set correctly and need to be done appropriately. I've texted the gentleman several times, with no response back. Comments: His initial estimate was about 6k. We settled on a flat rate estimate of 4200 which did not go up at the end. So I was happy with that. I had asked him to lay down a layer of gravel to build up an area of my driveway which i dont believe he did. But he rectified that by putting another layer of asphalt on top of that section. They were a little shifty and creepy. In my opinion, they wrote their own Google reviews. But in the end the finished product looks great. We will see how it holds up.
