Work Description: Wiring from house to work shop quit working

Comments: Tommy was punctual, however, he tested and tested, said we would have to have completely new wiring from the house to the work shop, and there was something wrong with the pool wiring - cost and this is a rough estimate on the low side, but he said $900. He said he would put a pencil to it and call me with a final cost. That was yesterday and he still hasn't called me with a firm price. This morning, I got another electrician to come out, it was just a break in the line in the ground outside the house - $85 and it's fixed. It pays to get another estimate - it saved me here $800. I don't know if Tommy knew what he was doing, was guessing, or just wanted Christmas money, but he won't get it from me.
I'm glad that Marcella got their problem repaired. There was no payment for my services. I checked the UF cable running from the house to the Shop and I found there was a compromise in the wiring either in the attic or underground to the Shop. Since it has been raining I thought it would be in the underground section of the wire. (1)- The wiring was run from the house electrical panel without any protection where it enters the electrical panel which is a Code violation. Article 314.17 - A thru D National electrical code. (2)- Where the wire exits the Attic space to the outside of the house the wiring was exposed to the sunlight and was subject to physical damage which is a code violation Article 340.12 - 9 & 10 of the National electric code. (3)- The underground UF cable is installed underground not in conduit and from my observation I believe that the UF cable was installed within 5' of the Pool which is a code violation Article 680.10 of the National electrical code. (4)- Where the UF cable enters the Shop it is installed in white plumber's conduit which is not intended for use as Electrical raceway. As to response time for pricing I was going to do that today 12/15/11. As far as the break in the ground outside the house, was that in the UF cable or at the electrical service. If it is in the UF cable and was repaired underground was it repaired correctly ?. Excuse me for trying to uphold the practical safeguarding of persons and property from hazards arising from the use of electricity. Thank You, Tommy Anderson A.M.E. Electric Company
