Work Description: Commercial Roof

Comments: My mom met Kevin through a home warranty company to look at a leak at her house. Because we needed to have our two-story commercial roof repaired she asked him if he did that type of work as well. He provided a quote, with the complete expectation that this was a full roof replacement. Work started but stopped for several days because he expected rain. When it did rain, water came through the entire building, down to the first floor. His explanation was someone sabotaged his work… This would require either (1) breaking into our building and climbing the ladder in the dark or (2) breaking into gated area behind us, with a ladder to access to the lower level of the building, then climbing another ladder to the roof, in the dark or (3) from the front of the building, using a ladder to access the first level then climbing another ladder to the roof, in the dark… We should have stopped then, but…

Work continued then they got to a point where they wanted more money and claimed to be finished – despite having just requested additional materials. The pictures they provided showed a big patch “repair” not full roof replacement. Now until then, my mom had communicated directly with Kevin but this explanation and request came from his wife, Haroldnette. Because I saw the look on my mother’s face I stepped into the conversation. Haroldnette said it was not quoted for a full roof, but as we continued talking she stated twice that she questioned Kevin about quoting a full roof repair for that amount. And, she attempted to write the quote in a way to appear that it was not a full roof repair. Like I told her then, they came into this job knowing my mother expected and agreed to a full roof repair, but they proceeded with the intentions of cutting corners.

Based on the pics they provided we could see that the areas known to us to be leaking hadn’t been touched. But he assured me and my mother that the patch work he did resolved the issue. It rained two days later and there was water in the building, including the first floor. He came and put down tarps the same day. It continued to rain and it continued to leak. We were fortunate that the rain stopped and we were able to clean up and have the scheduled event as planned. Ahead of the weather forecast and freezing temps we requested he put down more tarps, which he did. Forty-five minutes after he left a passing shower came through, and yes water was leaking in. We had to change our plans to babysit the building. We were utilizing any and everything to catch the water to eliminate further damage to our building.

Oh, I didn’t mention the ceiling fell in in the beauty salon below. The glued-down laminate floor was ruined, ceiling tiles fell, drywall, base boards, loss revenue…tenants are now moving because their clients are now complaining.

In the course of all this we contacted out insurance company to see if it could be covered, but they don’t cover acts of incompetence. And even the insurance adjuster said this was done poorly and that there was no way it cost what he charged. In fact, every person that has looked at Kevin’s work have all said the same thing – he didn’t know what he was doing.

While my mother decided to let him attempt to fix his work, his work schedule and hours were inconsistent – definitely not those of a typical contractor. And when he did show up, it was only him and his wife.

We dealt with this for 7 weeks. My and my mom’s schedule was now dictated around the weather and protecting our property. Enough was enough. Everything had to be pulled up and redone – by someone else. I have videos and pictures to support everything I have stated.
