Avoid centipedes this Spring!!

by Jessica /

Centipedes are not only a complete nuisance, but they are also creepy! - Read More
Really, really creepy. They are not pleasant to have hanging around your home, although they can be helpful by feeding on spiders and small insects. It's usually during the summer that centipedes gain access to your home through crevices in foundations or other holes, gaps, and cracks, in order to find shelter from the hot, dry conditions outside. So, once these creepy insects gain access to your home, you may start to see them out of the corner of your eye as they scurry across the floor, up your walls, or worse yet across your bed sheets while you are half asleep. A centipede infestation can cause anxiety and stress within a household, so it is best to take care of it right away. The name "centipede" is misleading as they do not typically have 100 legs. In fact, they can have between 15 and 177 pair of legs. Their flat, segmented body has a set of legs for each segment, which makes them quite long. Centipedes are commonly reddish orange or brown, their antennae are long, and they have a small mouth that is structured like a claw so that they can use their venom to paralyze other insects, spiders, and even small vertebrates for food. If threatened and handled by humans, the centipede can cause quite a pinch. If you have an infestation, you will need to remove all centipedes including the ones you can't see which is no easy task. Prevention is always the best policy when it comes to centipedes. These procedures and preventatives may help you to avoid a centipede infestation: Seal all gaps, cracks, crevices, holes, and other pest entry points into your home. Keep the area around your foundation dry. Trim plants away from your foundation. Remove all outdoor water sources around your property. Reduce junk piles and clutter inside and outside of your home. Fix or replace any leaky pipes that cause moisture in bathrooms, kitchens, utility rooms, and basements. Use a dehumidifier in damp rooms. Most importantly, use a professional pest control service for year-round pest control. It is the best way to ensure proper elimination and proactive prevention services for centipedes and other nuisance, harmful, or damaging pests. Adam's Pest Control provides reliable, effective pest control and pest management services in Minnesota and Western Wisconsin. Adam's Pest Control can get rid of your centipede infestation quickly and efficiently. We use EPA-approved treatments at all access points and other areas of concern to keep centipedes from re-entering your home. If necessary, we may use additional methods depending on the severity of your centipede infestation. We offer 100% customer satisfaction; competitive pricing; fast, local response; licensed professionals; and friendly service. Give us a call today so that we can help you prevent a centipede infestation this year..

Avoiding Mosquitoes!

by Adam / 3 Comments

Puffy, itchy, lumps on your arm, your back, your legs, your ankles--is that what spring is all about? For some of us it is. We get calls all the time from folks that are fed up with paying a mortgage so mosquitoes can enjoy their backyard. We say, "That's your yard! Take it back!" You don't have to let those mosquitoes have free reign. Here are some ways you can avoid mosquito bites this spring and make your yard a much nicer place to be. Backyard Mosquito Management The first thing you need to do is find any sources of still water and remove them. All it takes is a pool of water on a tarp, a little captured rainwater in the hollow socket of a toy, a tiny containment of water in your gutter system, or even a cup left outside in the rain, for mosquitoes to breed and reproduce. If you have plants in your yard that collect water on them, you may want to consider replacing them with something else, unless you have routine mosquito control from a professional. If you have a bug zapper, it is a good idea to put it in storage. Studies have shown that bug zappers lure mosquitoes in, but do little to kill female (biting) mosquitoes. If you have areas in your yard that are shaded, it may create a breeding site for mosquitoes when rainwater is not dried up fast enough. This is another good reason to have ongoing mosquito service. When you go into your backyard, there are a couple of things you can do to keep mosquitoes from biting you. Use a fan to create a breeze if there is no breeze. Mosquitoes are horrible fliers, a good breeze can keep them away. You may also consider mosquito repellent. While repellent is not a 100% solution, it certainly does help. For extreme situations, like mowing your lawn with a hundred mosquitoes tormenting you, you may want to consider getting clothing that has mosquito protection. We've mentioned it twice, but it bears mentioning one more time. There is no better way to take back your backyard than to have ongoing mosquito service. Mosquitoes rarely travel more than 300 yards in their entire life, especially the mosquitoes that are linked to the spread of West Nile, Zika, malaria, and other dangerous viruses. When you have a professional reduce breedings sites, kill hiding mosquitoes in your yard, and treat sensitive locations, you are likely to see a big difference. Take your backyard back. Get ongoing mosquito service from Adam's Pest Control--which can include a fully-automatic mosquito misting system that protects your yard 24 hours a day, through the entire mosquito season. Contact us today to schedule a free estimate. What do you have to lose but mosquitoes? Lots and lots of mosquitoes. .

Just give up!

by Adam / 3 Comments

How many insects do you think are in your home? None? One? A hundred? Some new research suggests you need to step that number up by a factor of 10. Or more. But don't panic: Insects and their relatives are living peacefully in your home. They aren't bothering you. Well, except psychologically, now that you know hundreds of them are there. Entomologists have been saying for years it's not possible to have a completely bug-proof home; now there are numbers to back that up. Scientists carefully collected all the arthropods (insects, spiders, mites, and crustaceans, among others) they found in 50 homes in North Carolina. In every single home they examined, they found extra residents. Of 554 rooms in those homes, all but five (less than 1 percent) had some crunchy squatters. If you think your house is spotless and bug-free, you are wrong. When you move into an empty house, it's not really empty. You have roommates. Over 400 people volunteered to have entomologists search their homes for bugs after a public call for participation. Because really, how often do you get to have a group of PhDs crawl around your house on their hands and knees for free? The research group chose a representative selection of homes, big and small, from 7 to almost 100 years old. They limited themselves to visible surfaces under and behind furniture, baseboards, ceilings, and shelves. I asked researcher Matt Bertone what it was like to knock on a someone's door, introduce yourself, and then spend hours crawling around their floor with a headlamp and tweezers. He said it wasn't awkward until the end (well, more awkward than what you'd expect if a complete stranger looked under your couch and bed). Before leaving, the collection team reviewed what they found with the homeowners. It was a bit of a shock for some. "I think they thought we would only find a few things, and we would come back with hundreds of specimens," said Bertone. His team collected and identified more than 10,000 specimens during the course of the study. On average, more than 93 different species lived in each home. And that is an extremely conservative estimate..
