Work Description: Driveway
Comments: My neighbor and I hired KM & Sons to do my driveway and his front walkway. Kapeli promised to dig down 6" and put 2" of gravel with 4" of concrete and then compaction. They showed up with a bobcat and were very rough and dangerous with their work. He bought a full trailer of gravel and most of it ended up in my field. They poured over very wet soft ground and assured me that it would be fine. It is now crumbling. I called him and he said they would be out to fix it and now the phone # is no longer in service. My neighbors walk way has developed a huge crack on the corner of the house which is why he had the work done in the first place to get rid of the crack. DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY TO DO ANYTHING FOR YOU!!!Lehi UT

Work Description: Concrete Horrible
Comments: He ordered less concrete than needed, I had to correct it and order 2 more yards (we needed 7 he ordered 5). He dug it down less than the 4” of concrete needed. I had to correct and get it dug more. It wasn’t compacted 30 minutes from when the concrete pour happened. I had to ask for it compacted. I asked if any gravel under it and he mentioned it was hard ground already. We have clay soil here. Gravel is to put a barrier between the dirt and concrete. He poured straight on dirt. When they were done they left and left our sprinklers undone and the concrete looking like it does.Update: after Kapeli's Response: We had received 2 bids prior to KM & Sons. One for $6,000 that would start in 2 weeks and one for $6900. KM & Sons big our project for $8,000. I said "no thank you we will go with someone else" he mentioned he could do the project for $6,550. There was no discussion about lower quality work or anything else. I assumed I would get a $8k quality for the same price as the others; or, I assumed, at least his bid was in the middle and he would do it just as good as the others. There was never a discussion about "rough" concrete - why would anyone ever agree to that - how is that even legal? Unfortunately, because of how this concrete was done we now have to remove all of it, do the prep work properly then re-pour with one of the other 2 bids. Obviously if this was something we wanted we wouldn't be spending tens of thousands of dollars fixing this horrible disaster. I'd save yourself the hassle and work with someone else. Either one of two things is the case 1) he charges significantly more than everyone else for the same quality 2) he offers lower quality than everyone else for the same price.
Final Update: The other company came to look at removing the concrete. They said it was the worst concrete work they have ever seen or heard of in their entire career. They were shocked about the horrible prep work, concrete spattered all over our house, it wasn't level at all, missing concrete spots and the list goes on and on. They mentioned it looked like someone did it on their own - except if someone did it on their own it would look significantly better and would at least be usable. Definitely not a professional.

Comments: Kapeli did a great job on my added RV pad, next to my driveway. He did everything he promised, including compacting the ground... TWICE! Laid quality gravel. Installed re-bar for strength. And spent hours smoothing, segmenting and finishing the final product. The pad is a professional job in every sense of the word. Work Description: Remove and replace patio floor 11x30 plus small sidewalk adjoining.
Comments: Kapeli came over and I hired him and his crew to do the work. They came the next day to start as I requested and their work is excellent and very detailed. The floor and sidewalk look amazing and Kapeli came the next day to seal the concrete and clean up any debris. I would hire him for any project as he is fair and thorough and arrives exactly when promised. I hope to hire him in the Spring for my driveway removal and new one installed. Work Description: Basement walkout, including two retaining walls and stairs, plus patio.
Comments: Kapeli is a genial man and the concrete he pours winds up looking really nice. I'm not sure he's done retaining walls before, because he didn't pull a permit or submit a plan with the city before beginning work. We wound up submitting a hand-drawn plan after the fact. I have no concerns about the stablitly of the walls, but It remains to be seen whether the city will pass it after the inspection they will do on our basement refinish. Also, I would have been more content if he had dug a deeper drain for the landing of the walkout. He said that the drain already around the house would be adequate to carry the rainwater away. If my basement floods, I'll be sure to post it here.If you work with Kapeli, be sure to get details in writing about what he will do and what it will cost, and verify up front method of payment.

Comments: Kapeli is a very nice man. I was surprised at how fast he was in touch with me after submitting my information. Another contractor contacted me after First Desert concrete and gave me a bid over the phone. Kapeli met me at my house after I got home from work. He went over everything he and his crew would do, the materials they would use, etc. His bid was under half of what the other company told me over the phone. He started two days later and finished the next day. It looks great. However there are a few details that I will have to deal with, the main detail or problem I have is a big puddle forms in front of my tool shed when it rains. Hopefully a bit of grinding will re leave this problem.My main advice would be, don't go with anyone who gives a bid over the phone. Have someone come out and go over everything. Try and be there when they pour so you can see they are using the materials they promised. You will never know what's under the concrete once the concrete is poured. Ask for pre pour pictures.
