Work Description: Kitchen Countertop
Comments: I worked in residential construction for many years, and know what the rules of the trade are and what is truthful and when someone repeatedly lies to me. Originally Derek appeared to be professional, however, when they were remodeling my kitchen countertop with expensive quartz, they short cut the material. He instructed his employees to CUT OFF THE TOP OF MY COUNTER to accommodate HIS error. This is ILLEGAL for one contractor to touch the work of another contractor without written consent from BOTH the other contractor (cabinet maker) AND the owner. He destroyed the integrity of the plywood that was to support a bar counter and took it off in its entirety, then instructed his employees to "just glue it to the 2x4s." I talked directly to Derek following this illegal maneuver and all he told me was that they had a "little trouble" with the backsplash and would install it the next day. When I was informed by the cabinet maker that his employees told them that "Boss said Derek was not going to pay for cutting a new piece, and just lower the counter" I called him on his deception. He had every opportunity to tell the truth, but chose to lie to me on several occasions. Had I not caught this deception, the integrity and strength of the countertop was not only compromised, but the backsplash would have been incorrectly cut to the wrong height. I again caught Derek in another lie wherein he outright lied about his guy not cutting out a wood notch out of the cabinet (again to hide their mistakes). He put that lie in writing. His employee, Salomon, told me that he had cut the wood from Derek's instructions, and even used my cabinetmaker's tools to poorly cut out a place for the bad mistake Derek tried to hide. It took four visits to make things okay, but in the process, when he yanked out the improperly installed countertop bar, it destroyed the wood panels on the fascia of the bar. My cabinetry people had to not only watch every move his employees made, but repair the damage that occurred. DO NOT TRUST DEREK KAHN. He will lie to your face. His company should not be Diamond Certified, and their work is mediocre at best. The 12" countertop was not accurate, wide at one end, and narrower at the other. Overall, he has caused significant stress and aggravation, with repeated trips for installation, lying and deception. As they say in the business, "Measure Twice - Cut Once." Apparently he only wants to make money and he is NOT present for installation, nor does he check the measurements of the final product before installation. STAY AWAY-FAR AWAY!-
