Comments: ———————————————————————-On September 19, 2022, I contacted Networx with a request to have my decorative concrete/ Carvestone resealed as well as to get the colors touched up. The following day I was contacted by George Spillman, owner of All Star Concrete. He gave me a quote of $2500 which also included pressure washing the patio prior to starting the job. I told him that I had several other estimates and that his was on the higher end. He agreed to negotiate the price down to $2000 cash and ultimately $1800 if we did not replace the mastic. I asked him if he had any experience doing this type of work and he told me that he was very experienced in decorative concrete. I have to admit, I was a little bit reluctant as he had a really negative review on Networx’s website which stated that he was basically a “scam artist”. The person who wrote the negative review said that George took his money and did not pay his subcontractor and the subcontractor put a lien on his property. I actually questioned him about this negative review, and he said that he was not at fault, and that it was just an isolated incident. George was a very likable guy, and so I decided to move forward. Also, I felt that if he was recommended by Networx then his work would at least be backed by a reputable company.
On Wednesday, September 20, 2022, I texted George to confirm that he would be at my home the following Thursday morning to pressure wash the patio and get the job started. George stressed to me that he needed to complete the job by the weekend because the weather was good and we did not want to risk any rain/water getting on the patio. The next day, Thursday, George showed up and pressure washed the entire patio. He instructed me to turn off all sprinklers and the pool cleaner, so that the patio would remain dry for the concrete stain and sealant application the following day. George texted me at around 12:30 PM, on that day and asked for half of the payment. I told him that I would only be comfortable paying $600 as he had only pressure washed my patio. At 6:30 PM in the evening, I texted George and confirmed that he would be at my house the following morning around 8:30 AM. Two hours after confirming our appointment time for the next morning, I got a text message from George stating that he was not sure what type of stain to apply to the concrete and what kind of sealant to use. I was perplexed because several hours before he was very confident on how to do the job. He then stated that he wanted to wait until the following Monday to apply the color and sealant because he needed for me to research the materials. Also, he said that he had another job on that Saturday, and therefore could not work on the weekend.
Sure enough, it rained that Sunday, but George ended up coming out on that Monday anyway and applied stain to the patio. He ended up not showing up to my house until after 12 noon. I was unable to take off that day from work, and therefore not able to supervise the job. When speaking to George on that Monday, I expressed my concern once again, that the patio was wet and dirty from the rain the prior day. George assured me that it would be fine and not to worry about it. Also, he stressed that he stood behind his work, and if there were any problems, he would come out and fix them. Because my project had been started so late on that Monday, George had to come out the following day, Tuesday, to apply the sealant. That afternoon around 4 PM, I received a text from George that he was finished with my patio and that he wanted $1800 cash. I told him that I was 30 miles outside of Dallas, and that I wanted to inspect the work prior to paying him. He ended up sending me pictures of the patio and told me that it looked chalky because it was not quite dry. Then he insisted on meeting me in Frisco to collect the cash.
Each day after the job completion, I kept hoping that the chalkiness and brush lines on the patio would resolve once it had fully dried. I ultimately waited until the following Saturday to walk on the patio and move all the patio furniture back. I contacted George multiple times over the course of the next few weeks to try to get him to come over to my home and take a look at the patio. Also, I sent him numerous pictures and videos. He kept telling me that it was my fault because I must have gotten the patio wet after he had applied the color and stain. He even told me that he was going to have to charge me at substantial amount of money to “repair “the patio. There were actually several times that he agreed to meet me at my home to discuss, but of course, ended up flaking at the last minute, claiming that he had a conflict.
After several months of being led on, I told him that I was going to contact Networx to get the matter resolved. George told me that “it would not be in my best interest to do so.” I did end up contacting Bruce at Nextworx in December. Bruce spoke to George numerous times and George kept reiterating the same story that he was waiting for better weather to repair my patio. Networx advised me to get a couple of other contractors to evaluate the job and give me a quote on getting it corrected. Each of the contractors stated that it would cost more than triple the amount that I paid George to strip down the patio and reapply everything correctly. Apparently, George had applied a water-based sealer, which is nearly impossible to remove. The last couple of times that Bruce spoke to George he agreed to refund me the money that I had paid him, because it would have cost him far too much in materials and time to correct the mess that he made. It is now May and I still have not received a refund. My patio looks horrific.
On a sidenote, I ended up doing further research on George Spillman’s reviews. There are many more people in California and Texas who have had similar issues with George. By the way, his company in California was called Spartan Concrete Coatings. Do not be fooled by his charming personality and demeanor. Beware!
