I launched Wright Design, LLC, a Full-Service Architecture firm focusing on sustainable and accessible living and in single-family homes + multifamily apartments . My goal for each project is to take design and construction practices to the next level through improving energy efficiency, building with durable materials and providing universal access for all.
Efficiency keeps our energy bills low and our buildings built on time and budget. I became a LEED AP in 2007 and was one of the first in the country to receive the LEED AP Homes professional credential. My past experience with energy audits of buildings from homes to high-rises has shown clients where to find energy savings by demonstrating across more than 3,500 dwelling units an average return on investment of 11% for energy retrofits. Investing money in energy retrofits outpaced the Dow Jones growth of 3.2% over the last 5 years. Sounds like an easy investment choice.
Accessibility is just not about grab bars or zero step entries, it is also about designing buildings to help us to live and work in our homes and community throughout our whole life – a Universal Design approach. I have worked on designing new or renovating over 1,200 Senior Living apartment units and residents. I think accessibility considerations are becoming more common with the large numbers of healthy Baby Boomers nearing or entering retirement and reconsidering where and how they want to live as they age.
Durability may not be glamorous at first, but it's what we want from our buildings; we want them to last. It means fewer trips to the forest or mine and less maintenance over time. And in our buildings, we want our tools, our friendships, our stories and the love we share with our families to last. The idea that people and places will be there for us is why we build well.
