Work Description: Shrub and Tree install, sod removal, landscaping

Comments: Every aspect and component of this job, which I overpaid for, has gone wrong and required replacement since my $5,309.66 ripoff! I contracted Sundrop Gardens/Manny Hassenteufel and crew to remove sod from a small side yard of sod, install a pathway in that space with stones and edging, create a shrub wall with sky pencil hollies, install a Japanese Maple, and prep the remaining space for other trees with mulch and leveling. 70% of trees/shrubs planted died despite watering, landscaping wasn't planted properly nor of decent quality, and work performed was NOT in line with city standards requiring a FULL TEAR OUT of path and ground coverings. First, Manny and crew did NOT advise me that city codes would make me have drainage and elevation differences nor did they build in said elevation differences to pass a city inspection. I hired the company to remove sod and dirt and ultimately create a shrub wall where no existing drainage problems existed. Ultimately, they did not remove/excavate enough dirt/fill for the job to pass inspection. My neighbor called the city to report me for improper grading after a summer rain storm resulted in water going higher than his foundation level as a result of the improper grading and natural flow of drainage. Next, the Japanese Maple tree began struggling immediately after planting. Manny promised a replacement, never delivered and stopped answering calls. Third, the sky pencil hollies purchased were not planted at the right depth and were likely cut at the bottom of the root base to compensate leaving them weak and unstable upon planting. Half of the 12 purchased have since died and had to since be replaced. The others will likely not grow properly as intended. Fourth, all of the path way and ground coverings put in had to be ripped out to comply with city code requirements. A complete waste of all mulch, stone, and edging purchased. Once I notified him of the city's findings, he tried to charge me ANOTHER $2,000 to remedy a problem he created. Fifth, he stopped responding to all calls and texts. I am in the process of seeking civil restitution for damages incurred. He is a part time landscaper and not an honest nor quality businessman. Lastly, to remedy all of his defects to date, I have spent more than an additional $3,000 to regrade the back yard, reground cover, replace all trees/shrubs he planted which have died. I still may be exposed to another $1k in losses depending on whether the remaining shrubs he planted will survive next year. By the way, all the other landscaping work done by Treeland and others is thriving fine.. STAY AWAY and learn from my mistakes to avoid similar misfortunes!!
