Work Description: 3 story home addition

Comments: Working with Joe Savage is a nightmare. He took our money, made us move out for MUCH longer than initially promised, and never finished the job. Our house is livable, but 2.5 YEARS LATER he still hasn’t scheduled our final inspection, our back deck was never finished, and our backyard is littered with construction debris and materials making it unusable. There are plumbing/water issues that he will not address. Forget about cosmetic finishes—we have had to try and do most of that ourselves.

In addition to overcharging us by way of making us pay his subcontractors directly, Joe flat out stole money from us, taking money for materials and never purchasing them. We have had to hire somebody else to finish his work while we work with our lawyer to try and get our money back.

Hiring Joe Savage was one of the worst decisions I have ever made. Avoid him at all costs.

Work Description: I wish I had hired anyone else.

Comments: He took $28,500 for a job. Didn’t do the job. Won’t give the money back. We have been trying to recover the money since June 2022. In April 2023 he finally agreed to a payment plan to turn our money but didn’t even make the full first installment. Has recently stopped responding to us entirely. Beware if you are thinking of working with him - he told us in June 2023 that he is waiting for a few contracts to sign and then he will have money again - so if you’re signing a contract with him right now and providing a down payment, the down payment might not go to your job.

In fact, before this job that he didn’t do but took money for, he was working on renovating our home. He took a $50,000 down payment and then did no work for 5 months. He said it was because our permit office was backed up, but I recently learned that I can check permit statuses online. We gave him the money on May 5, 2021, and he told me that he would have the permits filed by Memorial Day. I followed up through June and July and he kept saying they hadn’t been approved. Turns out, he didn’t even submit the permit applications until July 27, 2021. When he finally started work at the end of September 2021, he made me write checks for all of the subcontractors who came through - so he did no work to earn the $50,000 down payment and as soon as work started I was writing checks directly to the subs. We had originally agreed to a three-installment payment structure, but that went out the window immediately, and I kept writing the checks just so the work would get done.

In January 2022 he asked us to move out for 2 weeks so he could open the exterior walls to connect the addition to the house. We were not able to move back home until July 30, 2022. We had to crash with family and friends for 7 months - and by “we” I mean me and my husband as well as our two small children and our dog. Months went by with no work completed in our home. We finally had to get home so we told him to stop all work on our house because it had been 15 months since we signed the contract for the work, and there was no end in sight. He left our home with no siding, with live electrical wires sticking out of the addition, with live electrical wires hanging out of walls over sinks, with no heat in 2 of our 4 heating zones, and many other problems. See the photos - this was a year after the job was supposed to be done.

We have spent almost $200,000 making our home livable after giving him over $200,000 to renovate it. The amount of work that has had to be done or redone has been incredible. Every new professional I have to call to fix the next catastrophe wants to know the name of the person who left us in this terrible circumstance.

I would recommend you look elsewhere for your builder needs. I wish I had.

Work Description: addition/kitchen remodel/master suite

Comments: I would honestly love to leave a 5 star review. I hired Joe, back in march 2021. He told me the job was a 6 month job. I realize that with supply issues that was going to wrong and I was ok. My only goal was to be in the house for the holidays. I had to constantly stay on top of him to send the guys to do the work and finally got in around Christmas only to not show up for 2 months to finish the work. I moved back in the house and was waiting final inspections. It was months with no response and no accountability on his part to get inspections completed. The town then had to intervene to file paperwork basically threatening us to have to pay if inspections weren't finalized. After weeks of trying to get in touch with Joe I took matters into my own hands and went to town and got paperwork filed. He told me he would be there for final inspections and never showed. We failed the final inspections with minor things, but attempting to reach Joe has been impossible. I have given him many opportunities to do the work and move on. I had to hire another contractor to finish the siding since he again left me with half a house in wrap for months. The guys he has working do an amazing job!!! I feel bad for them to be in a rough spot to do what work he has them do when I know they would rather just finish and move on. The workers quality was great and I have nothing negative to say about them. I spoke to Joe as well trying to give him advice to just communicate better and he would be even more successful. I feel he has ruined his own company, however with the number of vacations he takes a year I am assuming that is not the case. It's unfortunate, but I don't want anyone else to be in this situation. I am currently looking to hire another contractor to finish up the minor inspection requirements and finish this project. Please be careful and do NOT pay him until project is done. I didn't owe him anymore money due to the fact that I hire an outside company and he has never returned to finish the work.

Work Description: Deck

Comments: My family was connected to Savage Home Improvements, also listed as J Styles Construction LLC, through another company in June 2020. We paid the $2,400 deposit for a deck to be built. The company still has not completed any work and has failed to return the deposit. When Joe answered calls or texts, he would state materials were purchased or he would have someone out to start the work on a particular day. Then a few weeks of unanswered calls and texts later, he would make up excuses about not showing up (weather, a cold, quarantine, delivery delays, traveling, product availability, availability of workers, etc.). Of course the excuses were understandable during a pandemic, but here we are now almost two years later and still no deck. If the work could not be completed, then the deposit should have been returned. Poor communication, unprofessional, and such a scam.

Price

Work Description: Replacement shower

Comments: At first they would not provide an hourly or day rate rate for work but quoted me $4K for a very small bathroom job...yet there price was 3X the material costs for a replacement shower?

When they saw my reply questioning to their price they then decided to quote me a daily price of $2000 per day for their work....they seem to get some decent reviews and their work might be very good, but I would ask up front what their hourly or daily rate for the work will be for your job.

I don't know any contractors that charge $2000 a day for a days work ….unless they can finish a job in one day including material, which would equate to a fair hourly or daily rate for a small job.

Being disabled and on a fixed income though I was more then shocked at their price, but some reviews are good and if you can afford 2K a day....
