Work Description: JS Custom Concrete is a HORRIBLE Company to deal with! This company contracts everything out and will never be present on your job site. We had the most frustrating 12 weeks dealing with JS Custom Concrete and Landscape Design.

We contacted JS Custom Concrete because we had a 10 ft drop off on one side of our patio and wanted to put a bench seat in to keep my kids from falling off. We gave JS Custom Concrete a check on April 19th and our project was completed 7 weeks later. Yes, you read that correctly. A project we were told would take one week to complete took 7 weeks to complete. There were some days the crew could not work due to rain, but not 7 weeks worth of rain.

Jim with JS Custom Concrete called to tell me that the crew was at our house and had started the project. Jim told me to show the crew where the bench seat was going. I went out and showed them the ledge of our patio the bench seat was going to cover. The crew’s English was very limited, so I was not able to communicate well with them. Jim NEVER came to our house after giving us a quote. Even after multiple requests from us asking him to come and meet us.

The crew worked one day removing our existing pavers and poured concrete the entire length of the area we wanted the bench. Never once did I receive a call from Jim while they were tearing up our patio that there would be an additional $4,800 charge. Jim waited until the next day to call me and tell me the bench seat went farther than he had quoted. His quote only said “Bench Seat” and nowhere on the quote was a place that said the length of the bench seat. Jim stated that his quote was for only half of the area the crew tore up. This made absolutely no sense to only cover half of our patio with the dangerous 10-ft drop off and leave the other half exposed to the drop.

I tried to discuss reasonable solutions with Jim since obviously there was a communication problem between us. He was completely unreasonable with solving the problem and even went as far to state that I held the tape measure while he measured the job. This was completely untrue! I was never outside while he measured and prepared his quote. At this point, we no longer wanted him to complete the project. We told him that we would pay for all materials and labor for one day of work they had completed and would like a check back for the remaining amount. He never responded to emails I sent to him and refused to give us back a reasonable amount.

Since we did not want to lose the half down we had already paid him, we had them complete the job. We continued to have problem after problem with the project and Jim still never showed up to our home to work with us on fixing the problems. The crew did not dig the trench for our gas line and placed the bench seat over the spray painted area the trench was suppose to go. Jim’s response to this problem was that there was not spray paint showing the trench. Thankfully, I had taken pictures showing the spray paint and the crew had to come back out and tear up more of our existing patio to dig a trench for the gas line. The crew placed the gas line 1 foot away from the sprayed line where the fire pit was suppose to go. Once again, I took pictures to document the error and Jim never once responded to our problem.

Finally, the gas company came out to finish the fire pit only to find out that the crew built the fire pit bigger than JS Custom Concrete told him. This error from JS Custom Concrete cost us an additional $330 to have the fire pit completed. JS Custom Concrete never took accountability for his mistakes and was never willing to meet with us once again.

We were also left with a mess to clean up. Pavers pulled up from our existing patio were left. We were also told that we were responsible for power washing our patio and putting sand back in the cracks where the pavers were put back. Once again, I took pictures of the mess left behind.

In the end, our patio does look great. The 7-week process was frustrating and unnecessary. Jim with JS Custom Concrete did not represent his company or himself accurately. Had I known he contracted out the work, we would not have hired him.
