Top 5 Ways to Save on Your Gas Bill

Every winter I think about ways in which I can lower my gas bills. I always wonder if there are additional ways I could be conserving energy, aside from what I do already. I hang at least one load of laundry a week and I turn the thermostat down to 65 degrees when we aren't home. Beside that, how else could I save? Here are some tips I found to help you lower your gas bills this winter:

1. Clean or Replace Furnace Filters - Depending on the type of filter, you may need to replace it as often as once a month. This could help improve the energy efficiency of your system by 10 percent.

2. Cleaning - Clean warm-air registers, baseboard heaters and radiators as needed.

3. Furniture - Make sure your furniture is not blocking the registers or radiators.

4. Window Treatments - Keep your drapes and shades on your south-facing windows open during the day to allow sunlight to enter your home. Close the drapes or shades at night to reduce the chill from the cold air.

5. Caulking and Weather Stripping - Caulk and place weather stripping around exterior seams, cracks and openings. The most common places that need caulking and weather stripping are around windows and where exterior materials like wood, brick and vinyl siding meet. Caulking and weather stripping around windows and door frames (on the inside of the house) will reduce drafts.
