If you have an exterior door that is operating as it should, is well insulated, and is properly weather-stripped, a storm door that is protecting it is more of an amenity than a necessity. In that case, it makes sense to repair a storm door that needs some attention to keep it from sagging, slamming, or flapping open, rather than to buy a new one. On the other hand, if your prime door is poorly insulated or weather-stripped, consider having a new storm door installed. Most storm doors manufactured today incorporate energy efficient features such as improved insulation, gaskets, and door sweeps that can save you energy and money. Keep in mind that screen doors often qualify for energy rebates and tax credits, but they only qualify for tax credits when they are replaced along with the prime door.
