Stop Squeaky Wood Floors

Wood floors add elegance and charm to any home, but when they squeak, the noise can make you think twice about your decision to install them. When you hear that creaking underfoot, don't start to panic about calling a carpenter: There is a quick fix you can do yourself. Grab a bottle of baby powder and generously sprinkle it across the floor. Use a broom or paintbrush to sweep it into the cracks between the boards. The powder will reduce the friction between the boards and stop the squeaks. Sometimes a creaking wood floor is caused by more than friction; in a case like that, wood shims need to be inserted between loose joists and the subfloor, or warped boards need to be straightened or possibly replaced.
