Your septic tank should not smell. If it smells, there are common culprits: water softener, detergents containing phosphates and too-infrequent pumping. You should get your septic tank pumped out once a year. If you're close to the one year mark and it's smelly, get it cleaned out now. The other issue is that you might be putting chemicals into your septic tank that hinder its performance. Septic tanks depend on friendly bacteria to break down sewage. Phosphates and water softeners kill that friendly bacteria. Yeast from the supermarket will repopulate your septic tank with the bacteria necessary for breaking down sewage. Flush a quarter of a cup of yeast every two months, and you should notice a difference in septic system effectiveness.
