Seal Your Mail Slot

When you go away on vacation, you can freeze your mail service. But is your mail service freezing you? If you have one of those mail slots in your front door that the mailman drops your letters through, it's quite likely that besides letting in your postal goods, the slot is letting in cold air. While those slots are great for ensuring that no one steals your mail, they're not great at keeping the house warm. One of the easiest ways to stop the draft and save on heating costs is to buy a magnetic flap that seals shut on the interior-facing side of your door. Widely available on the Internet and at some home improvement stores, they start at about $20 and come in a variety of colors. The magnetic mail guards take just a few minutes to install, and they work on both metal and wood doors. If you'd rather replace your entire mail slot, you can buy ones with insulation in them: They go for $45 and up.
