Roofing Tip: Fixing Ice Dams

Icicles can be a beautiful part of winter life. But, at the same time, they are dangerous and can weigh down the structure they are attached to, possibly causing serious damage.
The problem of "ice damming" was recently discussed on Hometalk. What is the cause of unwanted ice walls and how do you fix it?
The contractors at Woodbridge Environmental explain that ice damming is usually caused by a poorly insulated attic area of a house. When warm air leaves the living area, it warms and melts the snow on the roof. Cold air coming in along the soffits re-freezes the water coming off the roof, creating the ice dam.
Although there are quick fixes such as snow melt tapes and heater devices that can be placed in the gutters, in the long run, it's better to properly insulate the roof/attic area. Not only will it stop ice dams, but it will also help you save a lot of money in heating and cooling costs.
