Rec-room: Knock it down or refurbish it?

Before knocking out a wall or reshaping a basement rec room to mimic a movie theater, consider why you're not happy with the current room. Many rooms just need to be brighter -- particularly in a basement, where light is always an issue. Even with a $2,000 sofa, you still won't want to sit in a dark cave. A moderately skilled DIY remodeler can replace lights (just make sure to shut off the power before you start) and anyone can roll on a couple of coats of lighter, fresher paint. It will open up the room. The rec room will also remain more versatile than a home theater that doesn't leave room for kids to play.
