Photo of rusty pipe by Topfer/, a remodeling a plumbing expert based in Denver, posted a very handy guide to dealing with brown water that comes from your tap.  They said that the brown water is usually from sediment or rust, and that it is safe to brush your teeth with. However, they said that brown, rusty water can be a problem for laundry, as it can stain light colored clothing. They suggest running the water to flush out the sediment, and to contact a plumber if the problem persists.
