Painting Tip: Proper Prepping

Yesterday I had to help a friend set up a trade show booth at the Jacob Javitz Center in New York. The tasks consisted of things like moving furniture, hanging shelves and setting up displays - all easy enough. But when she asked me to paint the walls of the booth I started to panic. Unfortunately I barely have any experience in painting, so my first inclination was to secretly call in a Manhattan painter to do the job while she was eating lunch. Thankfully, I went for it and it was surprisingly easy.
For any fellow novice painters out there, a key tip to remember is that any surface to be painted must be clean, dull and dry. According to Jennifer McSharry of Kurt Dwyer Painting in Massachusetts, you never want to paint over anything like varnished wood panelling without cleaning and sanding it down to a dull finish. The paint will take to the surface much better if all these steps are followed.
