Minneapolis Researchers Take Turbines Underwater

Photo: Doug Kerr/FlickrWatch out, Minneapolis electricians: you never know where your power might come from. Thanks to its location, surrounded by impressive bodies of water, the city has long been a site for researching fluid dynamics, dams, and alternative energy generation. Now, researchers are teaming up with a group from New York to thoroughly test turbines that are designed to go underwater; in this case, on the bottom of the East River.

The Minneapolis researchers are working on determining the most appropriate placement and deployment of the turbines to maximize operating efficiency and get the most out of them. If their research is successful, the United States could tap into some of the previously unused potential of its great rivers, with far less disruption than traditional hydropower generation methods.
