Mark Paint Cans for Future Projects

When you finish a painting project and you start to clean up, grab a permanent marker. Before you close the paint cans, mark the outside with a line indicating the level of the paint. That way, when you go to do future touch-ups, you won't have to open every can to figure out how much of each paint is left. You'll know whether you have enough or you need to buy more. Don't forget to also note on the can which surface it was used to paint. If the can doesn't list the name of the color, you may want to jot that down, too, in case you need to buy more. How's that for planning ahead?
