Keep Fall Dirt Out of the House

There are several strategies for keeping the dirt and germs your kids will accumulate this fall out of the house, but they require some degree of vigilance on your part. The first line of defense against dirty shoes is a good welcome mat outside the house, and preferably another one inside. You have to get the kids used to using the mats every time they come in the door, and you have to commit to regularly cleaning the mats and the areas around them. Setting up a shoe scraper or boot brush outside is also advisable if you live where the kids have some mud to get into, and that's just about anywhere. Some people have been successful getting their kids to take off their shoes inside the front door or in a mudroom. I know one lady who gives visitors the choice of taking off their shoes or putting paper hospital booties on over them. I also know someone who keeps a stash of slippers by the front door for people to change into as they enter the house.
