How to Stop a Leaky Pipe When You're in a Hurry

If you notice a leaky pipe when you're running out the door or during non-business hours, there are a few simple tricks you can employ to give your pipe a quick fix that should last until proper repairs can be made. Before you start, clear out anything stored under or next to the pipes and always leave a bucket under the problem area until it is properly fixed. Then, if you think the leak is in the joint, grab a pipe wrench and tighten the joint. This will stop or at least slow down the leak until the faulty joint can be replaced. If the problem is a small hole in the piping, a crafty way to plug it is through the use of a pencil. Sharpen the edge, stick it into the hole, and then pull the pencil down so that the tip breaks off in the hole. Cover the pencil-filled hole with a few layers of duct tape and you can leave the house worry-free for the time being. If you are dealing with larger holes, you can cut a piece of your old, unused rubber garden hose and use it to cover the hole. Make sure it is at least two inches longer than the hole and clamp it on lengthwise so that it fits around the pipe.
