Heating Tip: Simple Tips to Discover and Block Drafts

Here in the Northeast, winter is beginning its decent upon us for the season. Shorter days and increasingly chilly weather are signaling that it's time to break out the cold weather gear and bundle up for the next few months. We also need to consider our home's protective layer as well.

The cold can easily sneak its way in if your house is not properly sealed up and insulated. Besides the discomfort, these drafts and heat leaks can waste electricity and money. A simple trick to detect such drafts is to place a candle near any suspect windows and notice where it will flicker (a burning incense stick can be used as well). The flicker or blowing smoke will indicate the problem areas. After discovering the guilty window, plastic sheeting can be applied and sealed with a blow drier to secure it. Heavy drapes can also mitigate the problem until the window can be properly repaired.
