Get the Look Cheaper: Carrie's Hallway Closet

Linda Merrill mentioned Carrie's closet from HBO's "Sex in the City" in her article on layout tips for small apartments. Carrie's hallway-gone-closet is a brilliant way to create closet space in an apartment with limited storage space. Although her closet was designed by the show's master set designer, Jeremy Conway, it's a storage system that can be executed by the average condo dweller. I found five closet systems that would work well as Carrie-style hallway walk-in closets:
- John Louis Home Deluxe 16" Solid Wood Honey Maple Closet System for closets up to 10': This wooden closet system is available at major big-box retailers for around $500. It's good-looking enough to be seen - the wood elements, especially the slatted accessory tower, might actually be attractive enough to make your hallway closet look less like a closet and more like a gallery.
- Pax wardrobe with interior organizers by Ikea: Renters face the dual dilemma of having to create storage in small apartment spaces and only being able to use impermanent, moveable storage systems. The Pax system is a moveable wardrobe system that facilitates a Carrie-like hallways closet if units are placed end to end. A Pax wardrobe with interior organizers retails for $295.
- Closet Maid Suite Symphony Walk In Laminate Closet System: This customizable walk-in closet system features modular options and a finished look. Some of the nice finishing touches that are available are cabinets with attractive hardware, drawers, and shelving. Prices and dimensions vary by unit.
- Rubbermaid Deluxe Configurations Closet Kits: This wire system retails for around $140 and is available at big box retailers. It is pretty minimalist, but gets great reviews for its durability and ease of mounting.
- Birch and White Elfa Dcor Walk-In Closet by the Container Store: Elfa systems are on the pricier end of prefabricated shelving systems, but they're durable, adaptable, and chic. The Dcor Walk-In Closet looks very similar to Carrie's closet - so similar that I wonder if the "Sex in the City" set was its inspiration.
