Disguise Damage in Wood Furniture

Wood furniture is a beautiful addition to your home dcor -- until it gets scratched. Don't worry, you don't need to buy a whole new furniture set: There are ways to fix scratches that don't cost much. If the scratch is the same color as the furniture or is only visible from certain angles, it's just damage to the finish. If the scratch is a lighter color than the rest of the furniture, you've gone into the wood.
To fix a scratch in the finish, try:
- A wax stick
- A 50/50 lemon juice-oil mixture rubbed in the direction of the scratch
- Commercial oil finish products
Some other options work, too, but should be carried out cautiously:
- Gentle use of wet sandpaper, then 0000 steel wool and paste wax (for urethane or polyurethane finishes)
- A solvent to melt the finish and fill the crack (for shellac or lacquer finishes)
If the wood is scratched, you need to color the scratch to make it blend in. Try:
- Rubbing the meat of a Brazil nut, walnut or pecan into the scratch
- Eyebrow pencil
- Crayon
- Commercial stain
- Wood touch-up markers or pencils
Once you've disguised the scratch, use wax or polish and your furniture will look as good as new.
