Chalk it Up to Prevention

While sitting down with piles of sterling silver and polishing away the tarnish can be rewarding once everything is sparkling, you have better things to do with your time, right? Grab a couple of pieces of chalk and tie them up in a little square of cheesecloth. Put the bundle wherever you store silver. The chalk will absorb the chemical residue that causes your silver to tarnish, thereby slowing the tarnishing process. Remember to replace your chalk bundle every few months. You can also stow a stick or two of chalk in your toolbox to keep your tools from rusting. This utilizes the same principle, as the chalk will absorb the moisture that would cause your tools to rust.
