Here are some gems of bathroom renovating wisdom from the Hometalk.com community.  They've been there and done that.  Learn from their triumphs and tragedies.

1. Work with existing plumbing.

2. Get a permit.

3. Before hiring, get referrals and make sure your remodeler/plumber is licensed and insured.

4. Schedule a Dumpster.

5. Before buying fixtures, check inexpensive stores like Habitat Re-Store.

6. Keep your budget in mind and don't splurge on accessories.

7. Install a walk-in shower to avoid renovating again when you've aged.

8. While your bathroom's walls are open and the pipes are exposed, take photos.  They will come in handy for future fixes and work.

9. Install GFI outlets.

10. Find an alternative shower to use while renovating before starting the project.

11.  Plan for the unexpected and be flexible.
