TV: Unhinged: Garage Goes Gorgeous
The Baltzer family (a family of contractors) saves the day by creating a beautiful office/den space from a half-finished garaged.

This season of "Unhinged" is full of new home renovation tips and tricks form the Baltzer family - contractors extraordinaire. Most of the people who the Baltzers rescue have fallen prey to bad contractors who can't finish what they've started. By utilizing their contracting skills, the Baltzers are able to transform rooms that (at first glance) appear to be lost causes.
Short Show Summary
During this episode of Unhinged, the Baltzer family stepped in to finish a basement contracting job that was never completed - the contractor in question had a heart attack before the basement was finished. Unfortunately, the couple who hired the original contractor had paid for the entire job in advance.
When the contractor was no longer able to complete the job, the couple was left with a half-finished basement. The Baltzer family's first step was to finish the drywall and electrical, and then move on to the design of the new office space/den area.
Maximizing Space
One of the things that this episode preached was how to maximize space. By creating a desk and cabinet that included many built-ins, the Baltzers were able to create a lot of extra space. If you happen to be handy with a hammer, then devising your own built-ins is a great idea.
If not, think about purchasing shelving units that are tall rather than wide. This way, you can stack objects up towards the ceiling by choosing units with drawers and top space. When you remove items from the floor, you are effectively creating space.
Is That Wall Level?
Before hanging a wall mural, the Baltzer team had to make sure that the walls inside of the basement were level. To do this, Summer Baltzer used a carpenter's leveller. Sure enough, the walls inside of the basement were not level.
Therefore, the mural had to be adjusted in order to appear straight. This is an excellent tip when it comes to hanging any shelves, cabinets, or wall art - make sure to use a leveller in order to keep any hanging items straight. Chances are that your walls are not perfectly even!
Eco-Friendly Cork and Luan Panelling
The one problem with a basement space is that concrete floors are less than welcoming. To fix this problem, the Baltzer team placed cork floor tiles on the floor. Cork is sound absorbent, stunning to look at, and comfortable to walk on. For an added twist, cork floor tiles were glued to the side of a built-in desk in order to create a bulletin board space.
Lastly, Greg Baltzer decided to use Luan panelling on the back of the garage door, so that the door would look like a decorative wall (instead of a garage door) when it was closed. Not only did this idea spruce up the space, but rugged Luan panelling is guaranteed not to bend or fall when the garage door opens and closes.
